Moga, October 11: Moga police have booked a travel agent and her associate on the alleged charge of cheating a local family of Rs 80 lakh on the pretext of arranging a study visa for Canada, police officials said on Friday.

The accused woman and her associate have been identified as Amandeep Kaur, a resident of Chak Bhai Ka village of Jagraon police district and Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Bheekhampur (UP), respectively.

A criminal case under sections 420, 406 and 120B of the IPC had been registered against them at the Nihalsinghwala police station. However, none of them have been arrested, so far.

In a complaint to Moga SSP, Sandeep Kaur had said that she wanted to send her daughter, Jaskiran Kaur, to Canada.

Her daughter was pursuing a beauty parlour course at Chandigarh after completing her schooling. It was in Chandigarh, that her daughter met another girl in the parlour who introduced her to Amandeep Kaur claiming that she was into the immigration business. After initial meetings, Amandeep took the mother-daughter duo into confidence.

Amandeep demanded a total sum of Rs 80 lakh from them to send Jaskiran to Canada via Indonesia. She arranged a travel visa of Indonesia after taking a sum of Rs 17 lakh from them in various installments.

In Indonesia, Jaskiran met two persons who took her to their private apartment and started demanding money from her. Jaskiran’s parents transferred another sum of Rs 63 lakh in various accounts as directed by Amandeep Kaur, her associate Kuldeep Singh and their Indonesian associates.

Even after getting a total sum of Rs 80 lakh, the travel agents failed to arrange a Canadian visa for Jaskiran who was forced to overstay in Indonesia for a few weeks until the local authorities took her into custody and deported her back to India.

The victim’s family also told the police that they had received threats to their life from the alleged travel agents.
