Teaching mathematics or getting the lessons may not be boring or difficult anymore if the subject is taught like assistant professor Charan Singh of a government college for women in Haryana’s Karnal, who kicked off a controversy by giving love lessons in a maths class.

A video shot by first year B.Com students surfaced online in which Charan Singh was giving love lessons to the girls.

The girls could be heard laughing in the video when the professor was telling them the difference between friendship, attraction, crush and love.

The first lesson was about friendship, which according to the professor is about ‘closeness’ minus ‘attraction’.

“Husband and wife become friends in old age after the physical attraction dies down,” Charan Singh said.

The professor then asked the students what will be the combination of ‘closeness’ and ‘attraction’, to which the girls answered ‘love’.

The professor also gave the formula of ‘romantic love’ by adding friendship, closeness and attraction. He also said if a relationship lacks any of the factors amongst those three, the relationship is bound to fail.

“The feeling of love comes when both the partners get attracted to each other. Both will quarrel with each other if the closeness is missing. In foreign countries, people change vehicle, house and even spouse if any of the ingredients are missing. Whereas in India, people continue with the relationship even if closeness and attraction is missing but this is good for the children,” Charan Singh said.

Defining ‘crush’, the professor said it is ‘attraction’ minus ‘closeness’. He said a crush is momentary and everybody experiences it in their life.

Interestingly, none of the students objected to the ‘love lessons’ given by the professor their Maths class. Many of them were heard laughing and even asking related questions.

No girl came forward to file a complaint against the professor. However, a Karnal-based social activist in a written complaint to the police, demanded Charan Singh’s arrest.

Following the controversy, the college dismissed Charan Singh as the maths teacher and gave him another subject to teach.
