Jammu, August 27: Irmim Shamim, belonging to the Gujjar community of far-flung Rajouri of Jammu and Kashmir, has cleared the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) entrance exam. She is the first girl in the district to do so.

Hailing from Dhanore village, she credits her success to hard work and support of her parents. She had to walk 10 km to reach the school every day. “There was no good school in my village, but my parents wanted me to become a doctor. They sent me to a school about 10 km away from my village. I see this as a step towards fulfilling my parents’ dream,” she says.

“Everyone has some problem or the other. You have to take up life’s challenges, and success will definitely follow,” she observes. “Despite financial constraints, my parents did their best for me. They want me to become a doctor and serve in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly Rajouri district,” she said.

District Development Commissioner Aijaz Asad was all praise for Shamim. He said every possible help would be provided to her to complete her studies.
