Akali, AAP MLA’s walk out of Punjab Assembly

Chandigarh, January 17: High drama was witnessed on the second day of the two-day special Punjab Assembly session here on Friday when Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators walked out of the Vidhan Sabha in protest against the government not wanting to “discuss important issues.”

Akali-BJP MLAs walked out of the assembly, as the session reconvened after the obituary references. They were protesting that the government did not want to discuss important issues concerning Punjab.

The AAP MLAs protested against their private members bill on scrapping power purchase agreements. They walked out of the House as well.

The Akali-BJP MLAs then staged a second walkout, after a special privileges committee decided to initiate action against a Punjabi school teacher, who worked as a journalist with a TV channel.

The second day of the special session had begun with obituary references.

The house paid tributes to senior journalist Shangara Singh Bhullar and Prof Surjit Hans, an eminent Punjabi writer and Sikh historian.

Obituary references were also made to former ministers Jasbir Singh and Sukhdev Singh, former MLAs Buta Singh, Daljit Kaur and singer Mohammed Sharif Idu.
