Srinagar, November 6: Two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants, including an Army deserter, were on Tuesday killed in a gunfight at Safnagri Zaina Pora in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
The gunfight erupted when police and security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the predawn hours in the village based on “credible inputs about the presence of militants in the area.”
“As the search operation was going on, hiding terrorists fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, two terrorists were killed,” a police spokesman said.
The slain militants have been identified as Mohammad Idrees Sultan, alias Chota Abrar, of Safanagri Shopian and Amir Hussain Rather alias Abu Sobaan of Awneera Shopian. The two were associated with Hizbul Mujahideen.
“The two were involved in terror attacks on security establishments and many other civilian atrocities in the area,” he said.
Idrees had joined militancy earlier this year while he was on leave. Prior to joining militancy he was posted in Bihar and was part of Army’s 12 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) regiment.
