Two Ambala-based Military Engineering Services (MES) contractors have come under the CBI radar, of whom one has been arrested along with two MES officials from Patiala.
Sanjeev Jindal, a contractor from Ambala, was arrested along with a JE of the MES in Patiala on Friday. A team of the CBI also reportedly seized some documents from the factory and house of the contractor in Ambala.
The CBI had registered a case against Commander Works Engineer Mukesh Prasad, junior engineer MES Sandeep Chhikara, Vikas Jindal, Sanjeev Jindal and some unknown public servants and private persons under Sections 120-B of the IPC, and 7, 7-A and 8 of the PC Act. They were arrested under corruption charges regarding the purchase of furniture.
Sources said Vikas and Sanjeev, residents of the Ambala cantonment, were bothers and contractors of MES Patiala and regularly took part in tenders. The MES officials allegedly helped the contractors in obtaining the contract for furniture for Sangrur. Mukesh Prasad asked Vikas to provide three quotations from different firms and to keep one bid below Rs 19 lakh. The deal was reportedly struck at Rs 2 lakh. Later, the tender was allotted to him. Prasad was reportedly likely to keep Rs 1 lakh from that amount. After getting tip-off, the CBI reportedly tapped their phones and recorded their conversation.
On October 5, Sanjeev Jindal, on behalf of their firms, reached Patiala to deliver the bribe. The CBI arrested Sanjeev and Sandeep Chhikara and recovered Rs 40,000 from Chhikara. The CBI also arrested Mukesh Prasad. They were produced before the CBI court in Mohali on Saturday that sent to one-day remand.
