28th Annual Conference of Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology Concludes

The four day mega event, 28th Annual Conference of Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology organized by the Division of Surgical Gastroenterology, Department of General Surgery, PGIMER, Chandigarh that focused on latest developments, treatment challenges, & its application in patient care through the four days’ deliberations, concluded here at Chandigarh with the participation of over 700 gastrointestinal and hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeons from India and world over.

The Concluding Ceremony witnessed PGIMER walking away with most of the awards in Research category including First prize for Best Oral Award Paper being won by Dr. Aditya Kulkarni from Surgical Gastroenterology, PGIMER for original research work done on acute pancreatitis. The Best Poster Award was also bagged by PGI residents including Dr. Vishu Jain, Dr Jaya Agarwal and Dr. Vivek Chauhan. It was an icing on the cake when the First prize in quiz competition on gastro-intestinal diseases was also awarded to Dr Aditya Kulkarni from Surgical Gastroenterology, PGIMER.

Encouraged with the outcome of the Conference, Dr. Rajesh Gupta, Professor, Division of Surgical Gastroenterology, PGIMER & Organising Secretary of the Conferencestated, “The key intent of the Conference was to disseminate knowledge, foster research and training as well as encourage collaboration. Keeping this in view, several new formats were introduced to encourage participation from trainee surgeons and to make it more interactive. A surgical video workshop wherein national and international faculty demonstrated videos of 25 surgical procedures preceding the Conference was a step forward in that direction only.”

Earlier inaugurating the Conference on 4th October as Chief Guest, Honorable Governor of Himachal Pradesh Sh. Acharya Dev Vrat. highlighted the importance of gastrointestinal tract from both health and diseases perspective. Welcoming the use of patient friendly minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, the Hon’ble Governor endorsed the need of proper training and continuing education.

The Conference brought together the confluence of best in the domain to address several key issues in the field of gastrointestinal surgery and share their experiences with a focus on the latest developments, treatment challenges, and its application in patient care. To mention a few of them include, Dr William Lancastar from USA enlightening the delegates about the diagnostic and management approach of benign liver tumors and underpinning the emerging role as well as future of pancreatic transplantation; Prof Ernst Klar from Germany discussing the recent developments in the management of liver cancer; many renowned national experts discussing the recent treatment options for esophageal, gastric, pancreatic and gall bladder cancer etc. Another key highpoint of the CME was the deliberation on the emerging role of laparoscopic surgery in various biliary and pancreatic diseases.

The Panel Discussions witnessed a very high level of interaction from the participants on various issues and challenges pertaining to multiple facets of diseases and their management in gastrointestinal surgery. .

Through an interesting and rich mix of lecture sessions, presentations with case studies, panel discussions and group exercises, the Conference provided ample opportunities for the delegates for exchange of ideas, thoughts and knowledge and thereby, chisel their skills and update their knowledge base.

The Conference concluded with the delegates finding it an extremely insightful, informative and invigorating experience.
