The Gurugram police late Wednesday night busted nine fake call centres and nabbed 12 persons for allegedly conning consumers across the globe on the pretext of providing “technical support” under cyber giant Microsoft’s name.
The action was initiated after the Microsoft attorney approached the police with FIRs filed in different police stations under Sections 43, 66-D and 75 of the Information Technology Act, and Sections 415, 416, 419, 420 of IPC.
Sources claimed most of the victims were based in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The police were tightlipped about the amount swindled.
“The complainant, after an internal investigation, approached us with IP addresses and other details. We swung into action and busted the fake call centres,” said ACP Shamsher Singh.
