Srinagar, January 21: A militant was shot down in Jammu and Kashmir by security forces during an encounter in Awanitpora region of Kashmir. The militant is yet to be identified.

The joint operation is being carried out by the CRPF, the Rashtriya Rifles of the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Initial reports say the encounter is underway in Satpokhran Khrew area of Awantipora.

The area was cordoned off after security forces received specific inputs about presence of some militants in area. There was a brief exchange of fire and additional forces have reportedly been brought in.

In a tweet about the encounter, J&K Police said, “Encounter has started at Awantipora. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow.”

This comes a day after militants hurled a petrol bomb at security forces in J&K’s Pulwama district. However, the attack didn’t cause any damage.

Police said the petrol bomb was lobbed towards a CRPF bunker at Newa in Pulwama on Monday evening but there was no loss of life or injury in the explosion.

Earlier in the day, three Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists, including a police deserter, were killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district.
