Himachal Health Services director arrested in ‘corruption case’

Audio recording of director asking for money led to arrest

Shimla, May 21: Himachal Pradesh’s Director of Health Services, Dr Ajay Gupta, was arrested by the state Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau in an alleged corruption case on the basis of an audio recording late on Wednesday night.

The additional Chief Secretary (Health) referred the matter to the state Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau after the audio recording went viral and the Gupta was summoned about the contents of the audio recording in which he was allegedly asking for Rs 5 lakh from some persons.

During the interrogation, Gupta was not able to give any convincing reply and was arrested, sources in he vigilance bureau said.  

Anurag Garg, ADGP, Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, confirmed that Gupta was arrested on Wednesday night after 4-5 hours of questioning as he gave evasive and misleading replies, and showed selective amnesia in recalling events in the past couple of days.

After the arrest, Gupta was admitted at IGMC being a patient of diabetes and BP, Garg added.
