Dog sterilisation drive in city from August 1

To tackle stray dog menace, the local Municipal Corporation will start a sterilisation drive on August 1.

MC Commissioner KK Yadav said the renovation work of the sterilisation centre was in the final stage and would be completed shortly. He said the MC would ensure that the firm selected for the work does the job sincerely.

Yadav said it had been made mandatory for the firm to sterilise 200 dogs a month or pay a penalty of Rs 100 per animal. The amount will be deducted from the monthly bill of the firm, which will be paid Rs 1,000 per dog for the entire process, including catching the canine.

The term of the firm engaged by the MC earlier had ended last month and the sterilisation work was stopped since then. The MC has been under attack over the increasing dog population.

Notably, a child was mauled to death by stray dogs in Sector 18 here last month.

An official said the MC staff would provide a monthly sterilisation schedule to the firm.

The firm will preserve the reproductive organ of the dog after surgery and hand it over to the MC for a count of the animals sterilised in a month.

Manoj Kumar Bansal, Chief Engineer, MC, said the dog sterilisation centre would be equipped will CCTV cameras and other facilities. It has also been made mandatory for the firm to appoint a veterinarian, two compounders, a driver and eight dog catchers.
