A team led by MC Commissioner KK Yadav on Tuesday inspected shops at the Vegetable & Grain Market in Sector 26 here to check the use of plastic bags. The team members also created awareness among the shopkeepers (retailers and wholesalers) at the market.
The team issued 7 challans to shopkeepers for using polythene bags. A penalty of Rs 5,000 each was imposed on the violators and plastic bags were confiscated from them.
During the raids, the Commissioner said the motive of the Municipal Corporation was to make the city plastic-free and every possible step would be taken in this regard.
He said the MC team, along with sanitary inspectors, would spread awareness about the plastic ban and challan the defaulters.
He said residents would also be sensitised against the use of plastic bags. After the awareness campaign, people carrying plastic bags would be challaned to enforce the plastic ban properly in the city.
He said recycling and managing waste was the best way to reduce litters. He said in order to make children aware of reducing waste, awareness campaigns would be organised in schools. He said all stakeholders and citizens would have to understand that resources should be used carefully by following the motto of reduce, reuse & recycle.
