Alcohol Banned On Goa Beaches, Heavy Fines From August 15

Chief Minister Manohar Parikar, while addressing a gathering after opening the incubation centre at the state-run Economic Development Corporation (EDC), in Goa, announced that the govt. ban on drinking in public will come into effect from 15th of August and heavy fines will be imposed on those flouting the rules .

The chief minister did not specify the amount or details of the fine and said that “There is something called civic responsibility. The footpath which is developed along the river in Panaji city is being used by the people for drinking beer” and added that , “There will be heavy fine for drinking in public from the next month. We will implement the decision from August 15 onwards”.
It is pertinent to remember that Goa is seen by domestic and international travellers as a tourist destination that offers great panaromic view along with cheap liquor which accounts for a substantial part of Goa’s econimy. And culturally too Goa is seen as a society that has internalised liquor into it’s daily habits
