Chandigarh, April 5: Former minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa is the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate for Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency.

The formal announcement in this regard was made by the SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal here today.

Dhindsa is the general secretary of the party.

Parminder Dhindsa, a five time MLA is son of veteran Akali leader and Rajya Sabha member Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. He was minister for finance in the SAD-BJP government between 2012-2017 and has held Public Works Department (PWD) between 2007-12.

Dhindsa junior is considered a politician with cool  and non-controversial approach who have kept the controversies at an arms length. He has come out of his father’s shadow and is seen calling his shots in the politics. That is the reason, why despite his father’s advise not to contest the Lok Sabha polls, Parminder agreed to party chief Sukhbir’s offer.

Off late, Parminder has carved his own way in the SAD politics and inside Punjab assembly too, Parminder is seen aggressively defending the SAD as deputy leader of the party in the house.

Parminder was first elected to assembly from Sunam in September 2000 by polls and remained MLA from their consecutive fourth tenures. In 2017, party shifted him to Lehragaga seat of Sangrur district where he defeated former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal to stamp his authority in the party.
