New Delhi, December 24: The Uttar Pradesh police on Tuesday stopped Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra from entering Meerut citing law and order constraints.

Gandhis were on their way meet five persons who died in Meerut during the protest against Citizenship Amendment Act.

Rahul Gandhi said the police did not show them any written orders for preventing them from going to Meerut and simply asked them to turn back.

UP police also released videos of December 15 violence in Aligarh Muslim University in which a mass of agitated students is seen pushing one of the campus gates indicating a potentially riotous situation.

The state police have issued prohibitory orders across the state after anti CAA protests turned violent last week.

The UP Police have, meanwhile, been criticised for using excessive force against agitating people, but the state police leaders today said they exercised tremendous restraint in gravely provocative circumstances, a video of which they released today.
