Ex-DIG Kultar Singh, 4 others get 8-year imprisonment in Amritsar mass suicide case

Amritsar, February 19: Additional Sessions Judge Sandeep Singh Bajwa on Wednesday sent former DIG Kultar Singh and four others to eight-year imprisonment.

Former DSP Hardev Singh was also given imprisonment for four years.

They were convicted of abetment to suicide in the case recently.

The quantum of sentence was announced in a mass suicide case in which five members of a family had committed suicide in Amritsar in 2004.

Kultar Singh was slapped a fine of Rs 23,000 while the DSP that of Rs 20,000.

Hardip Singh, his wife, mother, and the couple’s two children had killed themselves on October 31, 2004. Before the suicide, the family had written a note on the walls of their house and had also sent copies of the suicide note to friends and acquaintances by post.

Kultar Singh was posted as SSP here when they committed suicide. The family had blamed the police for forcing them to take the extreme step.
