Encounter between security forces, LeT militants underway in J&K’s Anantnag

A gunbattle is underway between the suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants and the security forces in the Mehman Mohalla, Lal Chowk area of the Anantnag town in South Kashmir. A J&K Police personnel has reportedly been injured and has been shifted to the district hospital.

The operation is being jointly carried out by the Special Operation Group of J&K Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The encounter, as per the official sources, started in the early morning hours and two militants are believed to be trapped inside a house.

The administration has imposed severe restrictions on the movement of people to prevent stone pelting and protests near the encounter site. However, there were reports of clashes at several places.

Sources also said that the mobile internet, as well as the train services to the district, have been cut off.

The Director-General, J&K Police, Shesh Paul Vaid tweeted, “On a specific input encounter has started at Anantnag, two LET terrorists trapped, J&K Police/Army/CRPF on job.”

Four days ago, the security forces killed three Hizbul Mujahideen militants in Khudwani area of Anantnag. The terrorists were allegedly behind the murder of the J&K Police recruit and trainee constable, Saleem Ahmed Shah who was abducted and later killed.
