A 24-year-old youth was killed after forces fired live ammunition and pellets to break up a protest near the site of a gunfight in Chowgam area of Qazigund in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday that left five militants dead. At least 20 protesters were injured in the clashes.
According to a police source, a youth identified as Rouf Ahmad Ganaie, son of Saleem Ganaie of Al Farooq Colony Anchidora was critically injured after being hit by a bullet near the gunfight site.
He was rushed to a hospital in Srinagar, however, he died on the way. Saleem had sustained a bullet wound in his neck.
A doctor at district hospital Anantnag told Greater Kashmir that twenty-two youth were brought to the facility for treatment.
The five slain militants belonged to Lashkar-e-Toiba and Hizb ul Mujahideen outfits, police said.
