‘Drug de-addiction centres to come up at Bandipora, Sumbal and Gurez soon’
BANDIPORA, JANUARY 02: Additional Deputy Commissioner Bandipora (ADC) Zahoor Ahmad Mir on Wednesday reviewed the measures being taken by the enforcement agencies to eradicate opium and cannabis cultivation in the district.
The meeting was attended by Divisional Forest Officer, Chief Horticulture Officer, Chief Agriculture Officer, District Social Welfare Officer, Dy Chief Education Officer, Assistant Floriculture Officer, Excise and Taxation Officer and representative of revenue department from Sumbal and Hajin.
Referring to the government policy for rehabilitation of people involved in cultivation of opium/ cannabis, the ADDC urged the officials to identify such persons to bring them in social mainstream by providing an alternate income source. He stressed on creating mass awareness among the people for motivating them for agriculture and allied activities.
He also stated that drug de-addiction centres will be established in Govt Degree College Bandipora, Sumbal and Gurez.
Excise & Taxation Officer, ShowkatBahar said that E&T department will organize workshops to aware people regarding harmful effects of opium/ cannabis and launch door to door campaign to eradicate the menace.
On the occasion, several plans were formulated for identification and destruction of illicit opium /cannabis cultivation which includes identification of areas and families involved, rehabilitation, awareness, constitution of teams and strict action against violators.
