900 kg of poppy straw seized in a week in Ramban’s Banihal

Jammu, Dec 3: Tightening noose against drug mafia, police in the past one week seized 900-kg of poppy straw in Banihal Tehsil of Ramban district in Jammu and Kashmir, a senior police official said here on Monday.

On a major attainment, an inter-state drug peddler today arrested with 50 kg ‘bhukki’ drug in Banihal, he added.

“On a tip-off, a special checking point was laid at Tethaar Grid Station and a truck bearing the drug was signaled to stop,” the official said adding that while checking the truck was found loaded with five apple boxes filled with bhukki .

The driver identified as Variender Singh, resident of Jalandhar Cantt and his associate identified as Gurpal Singh, resident of Kapurthlaa Bagwal were arrested on the spot.

“During further questioning, the driver revealed that he had bought the contraband from Sangam area of Kashmir valley from a dhaba owner and was meant to be sold in Punjab and adjoining areas,” he added.
