Former finance secretary Shaktikanta Das—the man who played a key in the 2016 demonetisation drive—is the new governor of Reserve Bank of India.

The development comes a day after Urjit Patel resigned as central bank governor. Although he cited personal reasons for his decision, there are talks that it could be because of the growing rift between the RBI and the ruling BJP government over policy decisions.

Das retired from service in May 2017. — Agencies
