It was like festivity mood inside district jail Udhampur as inmates celebrated Eid and Rakshabandhan with fanfare and emotional bonding in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Irrespective of caste, colour and creed, hundreds of inmates on Friday celebrated Eid with religious fervour and Rakshabandhan.

Jail Superintendent Rajni Sehgal said that during Eid celebrations, inmates offered special prayers and later food was served to them.

They hugged each other and exchanged Eid greetings.

”They (inmates) live like a family,” Ms Sehgal told media. She said that no matter what crime they had committed but within closed walls, they are facing punishment and simultaneously getting reformed so that on being released, they can join the mainstream.

”This year, the relatives and closed ones of inmates also visited jail premises to celebrate Rakhi. Sisters tied sacred thread on the wrists of their brothers and the scene was very much emotional,” she added.

”We celebrate every festival like a family despite representing different religions, castes,” she added and said that on Janamashtami, kite flying competition is also being planned for the inmates.

The Jailer asserted that the Jammu and Kashmir Prisons Department is making all efforts for the reformation of inmates and in this regard, various initiatives have been taken under skill development programmes for inmates.
