DMK patriarch and five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi breathed his last at Kauvery hospital in Chennai on Tuesday. He was 94. A number of politicians, including Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Rajinikanth, dropped by at the Gopalapuram residence of the DMK patriarch to pay their respects.

Even as thousands of supporters thronged Chennai to catch a last glimpse of their beloved leader, an unwanted controversy over the burial place broke out. A petition in the Madras High Court was filed seeking a directive to the TN government to allow a burial place at the Marina Beach, where leaders such as Annadurai, M G Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa have been laid to rest.
