New Delhi, July 29: Following a political furore over the mysterious serial deaths of family members and witnesses in the Unnao rape case, the National Commission for Women on Monday said it was taking cognisance of the matter and would shortly send a team to UP to look into the events.

“The NCW is deeply disturbed by the incident and is writing to the UP Police chief. A team of the Commission will be visiting UP shortly,” an NCW statement said.

Earlier on Monday, Congress leaders—AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and chief party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala–demanded action in the matter and questioned the laxity of investigation agencies. The Unnao case is being investigated by the CBI.

Priyanka, meanwhile, tweeted, asking, “What’s the status of CBI probe into the Unnao case? Why is the accused MLA still in BJP? Why is there laxity in securing the victim and the witnesses? Can anyone hope for any justice from the BJP Government without getting the answers to these questions?”

Surjewala recalled how the father of the rape victim was killed in police custody.

“Unnao and UP both demand justice for the victim daughter of the heinous rape. While the victim’s father was killed in police custody, two of her aunts have now died and she is herself battling for life.”

The crime dates back to June 2017 when the victim was a minor. The accused in the case is BJP lawmaker from UP Kuldeep Singh Sengar.
